2.4478 / ALLOY 52 – UNS N14052 – FeNi50 – Pernifer 50


Iron and nickel have very similar thermal expansion coefficients. Addition of nickel to iron can result in an alloy in which the coefficient is reduced in order of magnitude. Studies conducted in the 1920s found that an iron-nickel alloy containing about 36% nickel exhibits almost no thermal expansion at or at room temperature. This type of material was noted for its stability or lack of expansion and contraction with temperature changes. By altering the composition of this 36% nickel alloy, metallurgists created a range of special materials with unique expansion properties to suit specific applications. W. Nr. 2.4478 / Alloy 52 is one of them.

2.4478 / Alloy 52 is a controlled expansion alloy consisting of 52% nickel and 48% iron. Its extremely low thermal expansion properties are well suited for use in a variety of electronic applications in the telecommunications industry. They are used in industries such as electronics, medical (laser and x-ray machines), aerospace engineering, and cryogenic components.

The main features of 2.4478 / Alloy 52 include near-zero linear expansion coefficient and high strength and toughness at cryogenic temperatures. Applications are generally glass to metal gaskets for electronic tubes, automotive and industrial lamps, hermetic devices. Glass gaskets are used in a wide variety of electronic applications.

This material is used in modern applications that require metal to be bonded to glass or ceramic, and in areas where the thermal expansion rates of the materials must coincide to prevent differential expansion in the joint area.
