1.4037 / DIN X65Cr13 – AISI 420D

1.4037 / X65Cr13 / AISI 420 D are characterized by high hardenability combined with good corrosion resistance in moderately corrosive environments. Due to the high carbon content, 1.4037 can be hardened than 1.4034. It is used in the quenched and tempered condition and due to its high hardness it is ideal for the production of all kinds of cutting tools and surgical instruments. 1.4037 / X65Cr13 / AISI 420D with excellent mechanical properties, has good malleability.

It can be welded carefully but has poor machinability.

Areas of application are; medical and pharmaceutical industry, mechanical engineering, cutlery, knife and tool industry and bearings.

1.4037 / X65Cr13 / AISI 420 D offers good corrosion resistance in moderately corrosive environments without chloride, such as soaps, detergents and organic acids. It has good resistance to water and steam. 1.4037 is not resistant to intergranular corrosion in the conditions it was delivered or welded. 1.4037 should not be used in soft annealed or over-annealed conditions if corrosion resistance is a concern, due to the precipitation of chromium carbides and the formation of chromium depleted regions adjacent to these deposits. Thus, optimum corrosion resistance is achieved in the hardened state with a polished surface coating.

Gradual heating to a temperature of about 800 ° C is recommended before faster heating to a temperature between 1150 ° C and 1180 ° C. Then forging takes place at 1180 ° C - 950 ° C, followed by slow cooling in a furnace or dry ash or similar to support slow cooling.
