Stainless Steels

1.454217-4 PH – UNS S17400

17-4 PH (UNS S17400) is one of the most common precipitation-hardening martensitic stainless steels on the market. It features high mechanical strength and hardness, alongside good corrosion resistance. Compared to standard martensitic stainless steels, its corrosion resistance is significantly superior and is comparable to 304 grade stainless steel in most standard environments.

The main application of 1.4542 is for details with high mechanical strength and good corrosion resistance requirements.

1.4542 (UNS S17400) is characterized by:

  • High mechanical strength and hardness.
  • Good corrosion resistance.
  • High toughness at low temperatures.
  • Easy and precise hardenability by heat treatment.

1.4542 is widely used in the aerospace, chemical, petrochemical, food processing, and paper industries, as well as for pump and valve components. The heat treatment consists of solution annealing (Condition A) followed by aging (precipitation hardening) at different temperatures. Its weldability is good.

Common Specifications and Standards:

  • ASTM: A564, A693, A705 (Type 630)
  • AMS: 5643, 5604, 5825
  • EN: 10088-3 (1.4542)
