1.4028 / DIN X30Cr13 – AISI 420B – UNS S42000
1.4028 / AISI 420 / AISI 420B are used in the quenched and tempered condition in a large number of construction and fastener applications where moderate corrosion resistance is required. Due to its high carbon content, 1.4028 can be hardened than 1.4021. As with other martensitic grades, optimum resistance to corrosion is obtained if the steel is in the hardened state and the surface is finely ground or polished.
Corrosion resistance, weldability and machinability of 1.4028 / AISI 420 / AISI 420B stainless are moderate. It has very good mechanical properties. It has good forgeability.
Uses are Automotive industry, decorative applications and kitchenware, electronic equipment, mechanical engineering, pump and valve components, forks and knives.
1.4028 / AISI 420 / AISI 420B show good corrosion resistance in moderately corrosive environments free of chloride such as soaps, detergents and organic acids. It resists well in oxidizing environments up to a temperature of about 600 ° C. It is not resistant to intergranular corrosion under delivered or welded conditions. Optimum corrosion resistance is achieved in the hardened state with a polished surface coating. From a corrosion point of view, 1.4028 shows the same or slightly reduced resistance to corrosion as 1.4021. This is because of the higher carbon content resulting in removing more chromium from the solution and developing a higher stressed microstructure at 1.4028.
