Stainless Steels

1.454515-5 PH – DIN X5CrNiCu15-5 - UNS S15500

15-5 PH (UNS S15500) is a martensitic precipitation-hardening stainless steel that is an improved version of 17-4 PH. With lower chromium and higher nickel content, it is structurally more homogeneous (largely ferrite-free) than 17-4 PH. This homogeneous structure provides the material with higher toughness and better ductility, especially in the transverse direction.

The main application of 1.4545 is for details requiring high strength and excellent mechanical properties in the transverse direction.

1.4545 (UNS S15500) is characterized by:

  • High mechanical strength and hardness.
  • Excellent transverse toughness and ductility.
  • Corrosion resistance similar to or better than 17-4 PH.
  • Good formability.

1.4545 is widely used in the aerospace industry, aircraft components, gears, shafts, valve and pump parts, and the petrochemical industry. The heat treatment consists of solution annealing followed by aging (precipitation hardening). Its weldability is very good.

Common Specifications and Standards:

  • ASTM: A564, A693, A705 (Type XM-12)
  • AMS: 5659, 5862
  • EN: 10088-3 (1.4545)
