1.4472 IMPLANT steel is Pressurized ESR remelting. The N content is high, but the S and C content is kept as low as possible. Cr and Mn content is also high. It also contains a small addition of Nb. It indicates a very good pitting corrosion resistance. This steel is non-ferromagnetic until the greatest amount of cold working. Its high toughness makes machining a little more difficult, requiring adaptation of both cutting conditions and the tool.
1.4472 is the material of choice in bone surgeries such as internal fixation devices and endo-prostheses and numerous medical and surgical applications in terms of corrosion resistance, mechanical properties and fatigue resistance. Mechanical properties and repeatability make this steel the main material for micromechanical devices.
