1.4418 is a high tensile strength stainless steel. It has high toughness and very good fatigue resistance. It is designed for use in mildly corrosive environments. Some typical application areas are water turbine parts, propeller shafts, piston rods and equipment for hydroelectric power plants. It is also used in processing vessels, mixer production, bolts and shear pins for the thermo mechanic pulp industry.
1.4418 should be welded with welding consumables similar to the base material. Post-weld preheating and heat treatment are not normally required, except for heavy structures. Hot forming is possible. The heat treatment condition for 1.4418 is QT 900. It has a good weldability and toughness after welding. It has better corrosion properties than most martensitic stainless steels and is suitable for mildly corrosive environments. 1.4418 is considered advantageous in mild to moderately corrosive environments such as organic acids, some inorganic acids and salt solutions, but should not be used in seawater without cathodic protection.
The information given in this data sheet about the condition or availability of the material is not a guarantee for its properties, it only serves as an explanation.
